Radio Redhill has won a silver and bronze award at this year’s Hospital Broadcasting Awards. We won the silver award for Station of the Year and the bronze award for our coverage of last year’s Redhill Airshow. We also enjoyed success with our ‘Speech Package’ and ‘Specialist Music’ entries. Both were commended by the judges.

Richard ShawWe are very sad to report that Richard Shaw passed away peacefully at home on the morning of January 31st.

Richard joined Radio Redhill very soon after the first regular programmes began in 1975.  He presented programmes on Radio Redhill for over 30 years, receiving his 30 years long-service award from June Snowden, President of the Hospital Broadcasting Association, last April.

He was the station’s longest-serving producer, Wednesday evenings being his regular duty in recent years.

Everyone will remember Richard for his comprehensive knowledge of classical music, which was his great love.  His “Classic Hour” programme was broadcast every Monday evening and, once a month, he greatly enjoyed presenting “Your Classical Requests”.

Throughout his time at Radio Redhill, he took a close interest in the station’s progress.  He was Chairman from 1981-1984, after which he stayed on the Committee for a while as Treasurer.

Richard was particularly delighted recently when Radio Redhill won “Station of the Year” at the 2005 HBA Awards and he thoroughly enjoyed our 30th Birthday RSL last April on 87.7FM – when we were always amused to receive his e-mails from “Richard of Merstham”.

We shall miss Richard for his loyalty, for his friendship and for his humour.

Our sincere condolences go to Jane and all Richard’s family.
Our thoughts are with them.
